How to download your smart meter HDF file from ESB Networks

EPEnergyPal team4 min readUpdated 12 Sep 2026

Your HDF (Harmonised Downloadable File) holds every 30-minute reading from your smart meter. It lets us price your real usage instead of guessing, and takes a couple of minutes to get once your account is set up.

Step 1

Create an ESB Networks account

Go to esbnetworks.ie and register for an online account with your email. You will need your MPRN, the 11-digit number printed on your electricity bill.

Step 2

Link your meter

Once logged in, add your MPRN to your account. You may be asked to confirm details from a recent bill.

Step 3

Download your 30-minute readings

Open your energy consumption page, go to downloads and choose the 30-minute interval file in kWh. Pick the full date range available and save the CSV.

Step 4

Upload it to EnergyPal

Drop the CSV onto the upload box on our homepage. We price your real usage against every current plan in a few seconds.

Tip
Download the longest date range available. A full 12 months captures winter heating and summer solar, so the ranking reflects your whole year.
